Kinderdijk
South Holland, Netherlands
A UNESCO-recognized network of historic windmills built to manage water levels in the polder landscape.
About this place
Discover Kinderdijk
Kinderdijk's row of windmills illustrates the traditional Dutch approach to managing water in low-lying land. The site is one of the most complete groupings of historic windmills in the country.
The windmills at Kinderdijk were built to keep the surrounding polder dry, and many still stand in their original setting. Walking or cycling paths follow the waterway past the mills, making it a rewarding stop when paired with nearby Rotterdam.
